Lesson 9
Living the Seasons of the Witch
The Bones of the Craft – Lesson Nine
“The Earth does not rush her lessons. She teaches in cycles, not straight lines.”
— The Crone
🌀 What Is the Wheel of the Year?
The Wheel of the Year is a sacred calendar—a cycle of eight Sabbats (seasonal holy days) that mark the turning points in nature’s great rhythm. Observed by Wiccans and many witches, this Wheel honors the life, death, and rebirth of the Earth, the Sun, and the Self.
To walk the Wheel is to:
- Live in harmony with nature
- Honor each phase of the harvest and the heart
- Reflect on your own seasons of growth, rest, and transformation
These Sabbats are more than celebrations. They are invitations to listen. To pause. To align your soul with soil and sky.
🌞 The Solar Sabbats (The Quarter Days)
These are tied to the sun’s position—the solstices and equinoxes:
- Yule (Winter Solstice) – The Longest Night
Birth of the Sun God; rebirth, hope, candlelight in darkness
- Ostara (Spring Equinox) – Balance and Bloom
Day and night are equal; seeds stir, fertility awakens
- Litha (Summer Solstice) – The Sun at His Peak
Longest day; passion, abundance, celebration of light
- Mabon (Autumn Equinox) – The Second Harvest
Day and night equal again; gratitude, balance, preparation for descent
🔥 The Fire Festivals (The Cross-Quarter Days)
Older than the equinoxes in many traditions, these fall between the solstices and equinoxes:
- Imbolc – The Quickening (early February)
First signs of spring; Brigid’s day, purification, inspiration
- Beltane – The Great Union (early May)
Fire, fertility, passion; union of God and Goddess; new life
- Lammas / Lughnasadh – First Harvest (early August)
Gratitude, sacrifice, ripening; honoring effort and bounty
- Samhain – The Witches’ New Year (October 31)
Death, ancestors, the veil thins; end of the cycle, beginning of shadow work
🌾 Why the Wheel Matters
The Crone says:
“If you do not follow your own seasons, you will forever be out of step with your soul.”
Walking the Wheel:
- Grounds your practice in Earth-based wisdom
- Offers ritual anchors throughout the year
- Teaches patience and presence
- Deepens your sense of belonging in the sacred spiral
🌻 A Practice for Beginning
Choose the Sabbat closest to today. Ask:
“What is nature doing right now?”
Then ask:
“What is this season asking of me?”
Create a small altar with:
- A symbol of the season (leaf, flower, candle, fruit)
- A journal page or card with one word: Reflect, Grow, Rest, Celebrate, etc.
Sit with it daily until the next Sabbat arrives.
🕯️ Crone’s Whisper:
“Turn with the Earth, child. That’s how the wise stay young.”
