Lesson 7
He Who Stands at the Edge of the Forest
The Bones of the Craft – Lesson Seven
“He is not the tyrant you were taught to fear. He is the flame that does not burn, the stag that bows with grace, the hand that holds but never binds.”
— The Crone
🌿 Why the God Matters
In a world where masculinity has too often been twisted into violence or domination, the sacred masculine returns in quiet strength. Not to rule, but to balance. Not to overpower, but to honor.
The Witch’s God is not a figure of fear.
He is the green pulse of spring.
The laughter of the hunt.
The flame of passion.
The seed that stirs beneath snow.
He is protector, lover, companion, and wild one. And He is needed.
🌞 The God in Wicca and Witchcraft
In Wicca, the God often appears as:
- The Horned God – symbol of wilderness, virility, strength, death and rebirth
- The Green Man – a face in the leaves, ever-growing, ever-dying
- The Sun God – radiant, life-giving, bound to the cycles of the Wheel of the Year
He moves through the Sabbats:
- Born at Yule
- Grows strong in spring
- Marries the Goddess at Beltane
- Dies at Lammas or Samhain
- And is reborn again, as life always is
🦌 Faces of the God Across Cultures
Like the Goddess, He wears many names:
- Cernunnos (Celtic) – horned god of the forest and animals
- Pan (Greek) – wild joy, music, lust, nature’s chaos
- Osiris (Egyptian) – god of death, resurrection, and fertility
- Lugh (Celtic) – god of skill, harvest, sun
- Apollo (Greek) – god of music, prophecy, healing
- Dagda (Irish) – good god of abundance, magic, strength
Some witches see Him in Christ, in Shiva, in ancestral kings or warrior spirits. Others meet Him as a whisper in the wind, a shadow beside the fire, a stag’s eyes in the woods.
🔥 Healing the Masculine
The Crone says:
“He was not made to conquer. He was made to tend the flame.”
To honor the God is to heal the masculine within:
- To make peace with father-wounds
- To trust strength that is not cruelty
- To embrace desire as sacred
- To welcome emotion without shame
When the God and Goddess are held as equal and entwined, a witch becomes whole.
🌞 A Simple Invocation
Stand in the sunlight, or beside fire.
Say:
“I honor He who protects.
He who acts with purpose.
He who burns with sacred passion.
He who walks beside me now.”
Let your spine lengthen. Let warmth fill your belly. Let stillness become strength.
🕯️ Crone’s Whisper:
“The God does not demand worship. He invites remembrance—and respect.”
