Baba Yaga's Cabin

This is a place of embers and bones, of stories whispered through pine needles and truths steeped in moonlight.

Here, I share spells, scars, soulwork, and sacred nonsense —

the kind that speaks to witches, wanderers, and wild-hearted ones.

Not all who find this place will understand it.

But if your soul lets out a sigh as you read these words…

then you were always meant to find me.
Welcome to Baba Yaga’s Cabin.

10 -The Esbats and Other Lunar Mysteries

Lesson 10

Dancing with the Moon
The Bones of the Craft – Lesson Ten

“The moon does not ask you to shine. Only to reflect what is already within.”
— The Crone

🌑 What Is an Esbat?

An Esbat is a ritual held during the phases of the moon, most commonly the Full Moon. While Sabbats honor the cycle of the sun and seasons, Esbats honor the moon’s rhythm and her ever-shifting light.

Esbats are the heartbeat of a witch’s practice—more frequent, more intimate, and often focused on:

  • Spellwork and intention-setting

  • Divination and dreamwork

  • Cleansing and charging tools

  • Honoring the Goddess, especially in Her lunar form

🌙 The Moon as Teacher

Each phase of the moon holds its own energy:

  • New Moon – planting seeds, rest, intention

  • Waxing Moon – growth, attraction, manifestation

  • Full Moon – power, culmination, clarity, celebration

  • Waning Moon – release, banishing, cleansing

  • Dark Moon – stillness, shadow, silence, the Crone’s domain

To work with the moon is to live cyclically. It is to recognize that not all power is loud or visible. Sometimes, it is quiet and waiting.

🕯️ Esbat Rituals: A Simple Practice

Full Moon Esbat Sample:

  1. Cleanse your space with smoke or water.

  2. Cast your circle.

  3. Light a silver or white candle.

  4. Speak your intention or prayer.

  5. Raise energy through chant, dance, or silence.

  6. Release and ground.

You might:

  • Make moon water

  • Charge your crystals or tools

  • Perform a releasing ritual during a waning moon

  • Write in a lunar journal

  • Sit outside and simply listen

The moon honors both action and stillness.

🌝 Names of the Moons

Many witches use traditional or folk names for each full moon. These vary by culture, but common North American names include:

  • January: Wolf Moon

  • February: Snow Moon

  • March: Worm Moon

  • April: Pink Moon

  • May: Flower Moon

  • June: Strawberry Moon

  • July: Buck Moon

  • August: Corn Moon

  • September: Harvest Moon

  • October: Hunter’s Moon

  • November: Frost Moon

  • December: Cold Moon

These names remind us of our ancestors’ deep relationship with nature and can help focus your Esbat work.

🌘 The Hidden Moon

The Dark Moon is not evil—it is sacred.

It is the Crone’s cloak, the pause between breaths, the place where seeds slumber. It is perfect for:

  • Shadow work

  • Ancestral connection

  • Deep rest

  • Letting go

The world fears the dark. The witch walks into it, eyes open.

🌒 A Moonlit Reflection

On the next full moon, go outside barefoot.

Say:

“I honor She who changes,
yet is ever whole.
She who pulls the tides,
and stirs the tides within me.”

Then whisper your wish.

🕯️ Crone’s Whisper:

“Do not fear your phases, child. The moon waxes and wanes—and still she is holy.
